Notes: It doesn’t end with birth, it begins with birth; Paul said I am nearer now to my salvation than when I believed (Romans 13:11); You are not saved by birth, you are saved when you finish the race; There is more to it than just being baptized and just receiving the Holy Ghost–there is a diligent seeking of the things of God and being renewed in your mind and your heart that must happen after you are born; You gotta grow… you gotta mature… you gotta learn to eat meat… you gotta progress; Teaching “new birth” bible studies–there are a multitude of Christians that have never gotten to the place where they would take the risk of teaching it; It’s the greatest tragedy of our generation… that we rely on a select few to teach this blessed truth, when every single one of us could teach this; Bible studies on why tongues are important, what’s the difference between the gift of tongues and the initial sign of the Holy Ghost, baptism, etc.; We have got to begin to proclaim the truth–each and every one of us–to the people that we influence; How will they know if someone doesn’t teach them?; How would that man have known what he needed to do if Philip hadn’t said, “hey, let me show you… let me explain it to you… let me expound on it a little bit for you”; You are surrounded by hungry people that want and need God, and we just gotta be the light for them, and we gotta help them see the truth

Notes: Acts 2:39 – “For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.”; Not only was it a promise to all of them, but that same promise of God’s Spirit indwelling was made to you; The prophet said that it would be poured out upon all flesh (Joel 2:28); We are not just spirit, we are flesh… so if the Holy Ghost is being poured out upon all flesh, then it’s for me too; You cannot approach God… God approaches you; God speaks to you first… He comes to you, and then you respond to Him; He’s coming to everyone, but no one just approaches God… God approaches them; Every single person in the world that would seek God, has first been called by God; He’s called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9); He has spoken… He has opened your eyes enough to see Him, and to create a hunger in your heart; Every single person that is pursuing God has been called… and if you’ve been called, then the promise is unto you, and to your children, and all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call; The promise of the Holy Ghost is for everyone; Try to find one place in the Bible where it says it would be a bad thing if you received the baptism of the Holy Ghost… try to find one person that has experienced it that would say “it was horrible, and I wish I hadn’t done it”; There’s an abundance of people that have experienced it and it absolutely changed their life

Notes: Is the Holy Ghost necessary for salvation? Is it necessary for you to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost? – Ephesians 1:13 – “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise“; The Acts 2 Holy Ghost experience is part of this “new birth” experience; Acts 10:1-4… after this happened, Cornelius was led to full salvation by the apostle Peter; Being devoted doesn’t save you… being a prayer warrior doesn’t save you… being a giver doesn’t save you… but rather it is the truth that saves; You must be born again of water and Spirit (John 3:5); What is the single common sign of the baptism of the Holy Ghost?; If you have evidence that you’ve received the Holy Ghost, you have a way of standing up against the words of doubt from the devil; You can say “I know I received the Holy Ghost because I spoke in a language I could not speak on my own. I didn’t learn it in school, no one taught me how to do this… it was an outflow of God filling me with the baptism of His Spirit”; It’s a sign that cannot be doubted; Isaiah 28:11 – “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.”; Tongues was the initial or immediate evidence of the Holy Spirit baptism in Acts 2, 10, and 19… they all mentioned tongues as the sign when the Holy Ghost came

Notes: The gift of the Holy Ghost; Ezekiel 36:26-27 – “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.“; Joel 2:28 – “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”; And then it happens in Acts 2:1-4 – “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”; Jesus also prophesied this in John 7:38-39 – “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)“; You do not receive the Holy Ghost automatically when you believe… it is a separate but dynamic experience that is part of this powerful “new birth”; Acts 19:1-6 – “And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.“; Even though they had been  baptized in John’s baptism, it wasn’t enough… they were re-baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus–it’s that important; When you start looking at the Scripture and you see over and over, and the commands of God, and the abundance of proof that every single person that was baptized was baptized in the name of Jesus, and those that were baptized before they understood that, were re-baptized in the name of Jesus… then the only thing that could possibly stand between you and this truth would just be arrogance, or just religiosity–”this is the way I did it and I don’t want to change”; But these people–they understood… when they saw it, they said “we want to be re-baptized”

Notes: John 14:10-11 – “Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.”; John 10:30 – “I and my Father are one.”; John 14:8-11 – “Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. “; John 14:15-20 – “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.“; Is there any doubt that when you look at Christ you are not looking at the junior version of God, but you are looking at the God of the Old Testament robed in the flesh of humanity?… And when you receive the Spirit–the Holy Ghost–in your life, you are not receiving the third member, but rather you are receiving a portion of the very Spirit of the Old Testament–the very Spirit that made Jesus God?; John 14:25-27 – “These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”; Jesus said “I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you.”; The Holy Ghost is Jesus in spirit form; These three titles refer to the different roles of the one God–He is the Father in creation, Son in redemption, Holy Ghost in His body the church; 2 Corinthians 5:19 – “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”; It rings true with the Old Testament… Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD“; Isaiah 9:6 – “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”; When you receive Jesus you are receiving the God of the Old Testament… when you receive the Holy Ghost, you are receiving the Spirit that was in Christ; There are not three… there is not four… there isn’t even five… there’s only One–”Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD

Notes: What about Matthew 28:19? – “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost“; Matthew 28:19 was obeyed in Acts 2:38; The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are titles, not names; Many simply repeat the Lord’s command found in 28:19, instead of actually obeying it; Jesus didn’t say “This is how I want you to baptize them… using this formula”, He said “Go baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost”; They were not confused about the Godhead–they had full clarity that Jesus was the Jehovah of the Old Testament robed in flesh; They understood that there was a name that was above every name, and that name was Jesus… and that the name of Jesus was the name of the God of the Old Testament, the man that was standing in front of them, and the Spirit of the man that was going to fill them on the day of Pentecost; They understood that this was just one God, and when you evoke the name of Jesus you are evoking the name of that one God; What is the name of the Father?… John 5:43 – “I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.”; The name of the Father is Jesus; What is the name of the Son?… John 20:31 – “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”; What is the name of the Holy Ghost?… John 14:26 – “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”; The Holy Ghost is not a name, it is a title for the Spirit of God in the church today… Father is not a name, it is a title for the Creator that we understood from the very beginning… Son is not a name, it’s just a title for a role that He was playing… he was coming as the Son in redemption; This is one of the most beautiful revelations of the Bible… the message of who Jesus really is; The name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost is Jesus; The disciples never had a single conflict over baptism in the New Testament… they all did it the same way and preached it the same way–they were not confused, because they understood the oneness of God

The New Birth – Part 5

Notes: What formula was used?… The birth of the church in the second chapter of Acts made John’s baptism obsolete–it was updated when a name was added to it; John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance, or a turning away from sin; But turning away from sin was not enough, you still had the stain of sin on you; We had to have a name that took away sin; The turning from sin was a great thing, but there needed to be an actual cleansing that happened, and that cleansing that happened was when they would call upon the name of Jesus Christ; Acts 2:38 – “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins“; Acts 4:12 – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”; If we had people that were sick and we anointed them with oil, we would not pray over them “in the name of the Holy Spirit”, or we wouldn’t say “the Jehovah of the Old Testament”… we would say “in Jesus’ name”; If we were going to pray for someone to be loosed of devils, we would pray in Jesus’ name… the one thing that gives you dominion over them is when you evoke that name… because all power is in the name of Jesus; If we would use it all those other times, why would we not want to use it when we are actually being buried with Christ, evoking His blood… why not use the name of Jesus?; Actually in Scripture, no other way was it ever done, other than by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus; Acts 8:16 – “For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”; Acts 10:48 – “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord“; Acts 19:5 – “When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”; Romans 6:3 – “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?“; Jesus’ name must be evoked verbally to have a proper baptism; Notice three questions Paul asked the church at Corinth: “Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:13); Jesus was crucified for us, so we should be baptized in Jesus‘ name; Look at Paul’s own baptism in Acts 22:16 – “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.“; Water baptism is a command to be obeyed for salvation; Mark 16:15-16 – “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved“; Galatians 3:27 – “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”; You “put on Christ” through baptism; Acts 2:41 – “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.“; Ephesians 4:5 – “One Lord, one faith, one baptism

Notes: There is no evidence of anyone ever being sprinkled in the Bible; Every time they distinctly went down in the water and were buried, or “put under”; If you’re going to bury someone, you bury them under the earth–that’s what burial is… so if you’re going to be buried with Christ, you need to go under the water; The reason why they started sprinkling was because there was this teaching where they just wanted to make sure everybody got baptized… so as soon as someone had a baby, they just took that baby and they would baptize the baby; It’s a little inhumane to take a small baby and dunk them underwater… so they thought “we’ll just sprinkle them with water”; There was a misconception that somehow the water was holy, but really the water is just water… it’s really the obedience to the command of God–that is the key; The Bible is very clear that you ought to be buried underneath the water; Along with baptism, there had to be two conscious decisions made: first a belief in God, and secondly repentance; If you don’t have a belief in God and repentance, baptism means nothing; All of us have gone under the water before, but you have to have those two elements with it

Notes: The fulfillment of the command to the early church; Acts 2:38 – “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”; Acts 10:48 – “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.”; Acts 19:5 – “When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.“; How was the early church baptized?; The word “baptism” comes from a Greek word “baptizo”, meaning to dunk, immerse, or soak; John 3:23; Matthew 3:16; Acts 8:38-39; Every time it defines how they were baptized, they were always immersed in water, and every time there was a distinct formula that was used… they evoked the name of Jesus Christ, which is the saving name; The Bible says in Acts there is only one name that takes away sin, and that’s the name of Jesus; Matthew 28:19 and the synoptic gospels… they all agree with one another–when you really define it, it’s talking about using the name of God; We define what that name was from Isaiah 9:6, that the name of God is Jesus; When you evoke the name of Jesus, you are evoking the name of the Savior… the name of the One that died for you… that shed His blood for you; You are also buried with Him, which is another part of repentance… you leave the old man there, and then you leave and you live a different way

Notes: If there is a God, and He has a plan… then there has to be truth; Therefore we have the responsibility to diligently seek that truth after repentance; The next step would be obedient to what He is asking us to do… what He requires of us; Water baptism–Old Testament typology; 1 Peter 3:20-21; Exodus 30:18-21; Water baptism has two distinct things that it does: washing and burial; Matthew 3:5-6; The remitting (removal) of sins–when you are baptized in Jesus’ name, your sins are not just forgiven, but they are removed; It is like you had your record expunged, and there is no record of your sin; The God that knows all things… does not remember–it is forgotten forever; Romans 6:4 – “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

The New Birth – Part 1

Posted by on Saturday, 12 February, 2011

I’m going to be sharing my own personal apostolic testimony in the near future, but for the time being here is Pastor Andrew Arrowood discussing “the new birth” as revealed in Scripture…

[Part 1 of an 11-Part series]

Ministry: Valley Lighthouse of Van Nuys, CA
Full Podcast:
2008-06-17 – 1930 – Pastor Arrowood – The New Birth
Date: 6/17/08
Speaker: Andrew Arrowood
Notes: We all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and we were all in need of a Savior; Jesus’ message is very clear to sinners… it was repentance; Luke 24:45-47 – “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.“; Two things would be preached… repentance and remission of sins; He didn’t just preach turning away from sin, but actually the removal of sin, which can only happen through baptism; Repentance and remission of sins would be preached in His name, and it would begin in Jerusalem; This was fulfilled in Acts 2:38; This was the first sermon preached from the new church, and it was preached in Jerusalem; Peter’s sermon said, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.“; Repentance means the act of turning about–an about face, from sin, to God; Matthew 3:8; Matthew 4:17; True repentance is the first step to God; Repentance prepares our heart to obey the scriptures further; Hebrews 11:6; Acts 2:21; Matthew 7:21; Jesus is very clear that church attendance and simple easy believism is not the new birth experience; Faith is our first step toward God, but that faith will always produce action

Topics: The hermeneutical spiral – constant interaction with the text; What’s unique about Pentecostals and restorationists is that we bring something a little different–we bring an experience of the Spirit of God; Not only are we gaining understanding, but we are also gaining experience; Then we bring that experience/spiritual encounter with God back to the text; The role of history–History documents the extent to which people have been faithful to the Word of God; If we lifted up 2,000 years of history and set it aside, and then took your experience and your belief and put it side by side with only the New Testament… does it fit? Does it match?; Like the Apostle Paul asked the Ephesians, we can feel very confident asking… have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed? That’s not a question we get from 2,000 years of church history, it’s a question we get from the New Testament (see Acts 19:1-7)

Topics: In Acts 2:37 they ask the big question… “What do we have to do?”; If the Apostles understood this the way moderns understand it, they would have said “Repeat the prayer after me, and say with your mouth Jesus Christ is Lord, and you’re done”; But in Acts 2:38 Peter said that to call on the name of the Lord and be saved you must repent of your sins, get baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and then you will receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost; The “whoever will call on the name of the Lord” is not a formula for salvation, it’s a statement of the availability of God’s salvation–whoever calls on the name of the Lord is going to be saved; Romans 10:12 – “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.”; If you come with an 18th Century Calvinist understanding of this, you get a doctrine that says conversion is you confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and Savior, therefore you’re saved; But if you have a restorationist hermeneutic and say “what did the Apostles do?…”; The passage in Romans is written to people that are already saved–Paul isn’t walking them through conversion, but pointing them back to the assurance of their conversion; We actually see such a conversion in Acts 2, with the same verse being quoted; We take the Apostles’ example and understand Romans 10 through the lens of how the Apostles preached those very same verses when they preached to sinners

Topics: Romans 10:1-13; Often used as a formula for salvation… if you confess that Jesus Christ is Lord with your mouth then you’re saved; The question is, how did the Apostles do this?; Paul is quoting several passages from the Old Testament; Romans 10:13 – “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved“; Scholars believe Paul is specifically referring to a baptismal confession (in the waters of baptism, people are calling on the name of Jesus Christ, affirming Him as their Savior); Paul quotes from the Old Testament prophet Joel – “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (quotation from Joel 2); We also see this in Acts 2–Peter preaches on the day of Pentecost, tells them that these people speaking with tongues is the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy that God is going to pour out His Spirit on all flesh… and that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved
