In commemoration of the International Day of Peace and the G-20 Summit
being hosted in Pittsburgh, East Liberty Presbyterian Church (ELPC) will be
hosting a special “Evening Worship with Taizé Music” on Wednesday,
September 23 at 7:00 pm.

For the past ten years, ELPC has provided Wednesday evening services
shaped around the liturgy and music of Taizé worship. This ecumenical
worship model includes meditative chants, silence, candlelit worship
spaces, and extended times for prayer. Taizé worship developed after
World War II in an effort to bring together people of faith from different
religious backgrounds, and it continues to offer a rich, liturgical option for
many worshipers at ELPC’s weekly services.

Embassy officials from the G-20 nations have been invited to send
representatives to this special worship service, with a dessert reception to
follow afterwards.

I learned more from that one documentary than from all the years being taught about it in school combined. What made the difference? For the first time, I actually put myself in their shoes.

I thought about my own family going through what they went through… my kids being forced to watch their parents die a tragic, horrifying death right before their eyes. I could see tears of pain streaming down their faces as they reached out for us in terror and helplessness.

I thought of how tragic it would be for their innocent little bodies to be so badly burned–to stumble through the streets with no food or water, and no one to care if they lived or died.

I saw the light in their eyes grow dim from the heartache of it all.

And then it hit me… their children were no less innocent than my own.

I was distraught that not only had my own country caused this death and destruction, but that up until that point in my life I had simply believed it was a “good thing” because it “ended the war”. At least, that’s what I’d always been taught to think. I bought into the notion that it was a “necessary evil” for the “greater good” (meaning it’s somehow ok to commit evil for the sake of good, or that the ends justify the means).

But are we really so sure we have God’s favor in deciding to take another man’s life, regardless of what he has or hasn’t done? I’m having a hard time finding that one in the new covenant of Christ…

“‘You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…‘“

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.“

Lately I’ve been coming to understand that the proper way to understand Scripture is to just take it at face-value. It seems that when God writes a Book, He says what He means and means what He says. Just because we have a hard time coming to grips with it in our human understanding, that doesn’t mean we should cast it aside altogether.

So how does one make the leap from “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord” to “Take matters into your own hands and kill them before they kill you“?

I believe this happens when we put our faith in the wisdom of man instead of the wisdom of God. It’s an easy thing to do, because if we’re not fully engaged in the spiritual battle that is being waged over the souls of men, we lose sight of the fact that God has called us to something much greater than self-preservation. He has called us to live or die for His sake, making disciples of all nations and building His Heavenly Kingdom of which there is no end. What higher calling is there than that?

“For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.“

“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?‘”

- Matthew 16:24-26 (ESV)

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.“

So the question we have to ask ourselves is… Does God love “the enemy” any less than He loves us? Does He desire for them to be saved any less than He wants us to be saved? Is any man–no matter how egregious his sin–beyond the power of Christ to save, heal, and forgive? If the answer is “no“, then how can we possibly justify taking their lives, for any reason whatsoever, when there’s still a chance they might come to know Him?

There is indeed an enemy in our midst… we just need to be clear on who that enemy is.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.“

“If all this were true, how could the government and mainstream media possibly get away with such monumental lies and widespread corruption and not get caught?”

This is an excellent question, and it’s the first thing I asked myself as well. The answer is profound, yet simple…

First, they’re darn good liars.

That’s the easy part. It’s how they came to be this way that’s hard to understand.

Most people would probably agree that the majority of politicians are corrupt, dishonest, and self-seeking. Since the inception of our nation literally thousands of them have been caught in flat-out lies, scandals, corruption, and moral failures of every kind. Yet despite this fact, for the most part we continue to trust them to lead our country. We rationalize that these betrayals are isolated incidents and that the majority of government is well-meaning and really is looking out for our best interests.

What if just the opposite were true? What if the vast majority of our politicians are natural born liars, they just haven’t been found out yet?

In the most recent episode of The Corbett Report, James Corbett shares his research into the clinical definition of the word “psychopath“. Most people think the term strictly refers to those mentally insane lunatics who go on killing sprees and commit the most brutal types of murder. People associate the word “psychopath” with a complete and utter lack of self-control.

While it’s obvious that these types of individuals–people like Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and others are indeed psychopathic, that doesn’t mean that all psychopaths look and act they way they do. In fact, there is another breed of “psychopath” that is far more dangerous than even these notorious killers.

I am referring to the “controlled psychopath“. These are the individuals that have the same evil thoughts and intentions as the Ted Bundy’s of the world, yet they are able to control themselves in order to rise to powerful positions, where they are able to deceive and inflict harm upon an even greater number of people. These are the real terrorists. They are extremely dangerous because they have absolutely no conscious, but the average person cannot tell they are faking their every emotion.

The evidence for this is quite clear. We see it over and over again in movies, television shows, and novels, let alone in real life. The man or woman we believe to be the “good guy” the whole time, turns out to be the evil mastermind bent on murder and destruction.

(Also, check out the videos under the Related video section below). Imagine if these “controlled psychopaths” were filling the ranks of government throughout the entire world. You would be looking at well-composed psychopaths posing as the very saviors of the planet.

Think the idea sounds preposterous? Let’s not forget the power that Satan, the Father of Lies, holds over the earth to literally deceive millions upon millions of people. The evil rulers guiding the planet are not doing so by their own “ability” alone… they are being supernaturally charged by a dark spiritual force.

The end game of Satan’s evil agenda is to build the infrastructure for the meteoric rise to power of the Antichrist.

Think again.

Let me show you just one example of an absolute, bold-faced lie thrown out there like it’s no big deal… This is one small example of what comes out of Glenn Beck and the Fox News Channel on a daily basis. (Not just Fox News, of course, but all corporate controlled media, including NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, etc.)

[Keep in mind that up until a year ago, I used to watch Fox News religiously. I thought it was a bastion of independent journalism and political commentary, and that all the other news networks were the ones that were biased.]

First of all, I have been a part of the 9/11 Truth movement for about a year now, and have never heard a single person calling for violence in any way, shape, or form. As a Christ follower and a lover of humanity, I would never associate myself with a group that called for such things.

Now listen to Glenn Beck’s big lie about the 9/11 Truth movement.

If you tend to believe what he’s saying, I encourage you to listen to any of the podcasts I link to on the Podcasts page of Waking Jonah. The majority of these people are indeed 9/11 truthers and do call for a new independent investigation into 9/11. They want the government’s official story to be revealed for what it is–a bold-faced lie.

That being said, don’t take my word for it. Find out for yourself if the Truth Movement is in any way advocating for violence, or if they are doing just the opposite… trying to protect and defend America from the real perpetrators of 9/11, whoever that may be.

If you want to know the truth, spend some time listening to these podcasts and visiting the sites under the 9/11 Truth section to the right. The lies of the government, mainstream media, and so many others will only stand if people trust them implicitly without looking into what they are saying.

I hope this post causes you to question whether or not you can trust anything coming out of mainstream media, regardless of whether it is coming from the “left” or the “right”. Both parties are bought and paid for.

Once you do your own investigative research, the big lies of government and the controlled corporate media start to come crashing down, one by one. And the bigger the lie, the harder it falls.

It’s really not as complicated as modern American evangelicals have made it out to be. First, you unplug the T.V., turn off the radio, and shut down the computer. Then you still your heart, search the Scriptures, and ask God alone to speak.

You have to completely set aside any thoughts or opinions that are parroted over and over again from the government, mainstream media, friends and family, your favorite political commentators, and especially… your own mind.

Listen for the Holy Spirit alone to convict you according to the Word of Truth. That is the only place you will find answers that you can truly rely upon.

In regard to the torture debate, I have to ask myself one question: If the Bible and the Spirit of God were literally my only inputs (no mainstream media, government officials, political analysts, T.V. shows, newspapers, movies, Jack Bauer, or anything else), where would my convictions rest?

If I put Christ above country, do I end up with torture, or something radically different?
